In this article reporting the of field-work undertaken for the M. Hooper describes the system of social relations that he found in the Auckland community of Cook Islanders—its distinctive institutions and patterns of social organization—and he discusses also the Cook Islanders' relations with other people or organizations in Auckland and with their own kin back home in the Cooks. Hooper is at present working for a doctorate at Harvard University.
The early issues of the Journal contain a rich repository of indigenous texts and traditions contributed by Pacific peoples, as well as by missionaries and other sojourners, often published in local languages with English translations.
More recently they have been ed by sociologists, political scientists, economists and other scholars.
